Jumping back on a church staff for an interim role the last few months has been a good pill for me. It’s also driven him some thoughts I’ve been having about GenZ and young millennials trying to fit into these staff teams that are probably geared more towards me than them.

At Leadership Pathway, we’ve long held to the ideal that we “coach the coaches.” We coach the people on the team who have a young resident in how to develop talent. In fact, we’ve gone out of our way to not engage the resident in the first year to make sure they know that they should be looking to their supervisor for coaching.

But what about the GenZ or a young millennial who didn’t have a couple of years of developmental conversations? This has led us to address their specific needs with FirstSteps Coaching.

It’s designed to be a one on one coaching experience for full-time staff with the goal of them growing in specific soft skills as well as not “quit or get fired” in the first 3 years.

I continue to believe that a 2-year residency followed by a minimum of a 3-year full-time run puts leaders on the sure footing that could land them at some point as the “29-32-year-old purple unicorn with 7 years of experience” that we are all looking for…
